When people choose between three or more alternatives, they do not have ready made preferences in their mind, but rather construct them on the go. This process leads to systematic effects of the given choice set (the context) on the final choice, violating amongst others the principle of independence of irrelevant alternatives. In my research, I try to formally model the preference construction process, taking into account context effects like, for example, the similarity, attraction and compromise effects. The 2N-ary choice tree model not only explains many of the known experimental results but also provides analytical solutions for choice probabilities and expected choice response times. My current goal is to apply the model to further choice situations and to empirically validate the results.
Marc joined the team as a research associate in 2014. His main research interests are:
– cognitive biases and debiasing in judgment and decision making
– experimental psychology
– quantitative and statistical research methods
Marc is part of the research project “Framing in der Bedarfsbestimmung: Daten und Modelle” of the interdisciplinary DFG-Research Group FOR2104 “Bedarfsgerechtigkeit und Verteilungsprozeduren”.
